One Encounter: A new story begins

Hi,

Took a lovely weekend off to visit my in-laws for Mother’s Day. We had a full day together with all the siblings and Mom. It was great! Of course, I had quiet time too.

On Saturday morning, I sat on the patio of my hotel room, enjoying the dry morning air and writing words. A rustling of leaves made me jerk and search. A large bush separated the patio from a common walkway. The rustling came from the dried leaves under it. Knowing how common snakes are in the area, I didn’t move until my eye caught a large lizard watching me.

He/she dashed out of the leaves towards my patio, froze, and stared at me. We stared at each other until, faster than a blink, he/she circled back under the bush and dead leaves, his camouflage working very well. He/she was hard, but I found him/her staring back at me.

Clark’s Spiny Lizard

I went back to work, but kept one eye on my new friend. He/she had a good idea of how dragons should act. The lizard repeated the darting around the bush, coming to the edge of the patio, staring at me, and circling again. It was fun. I remained in the chair, typing until he/she stood close to me. That’s when I got out my phone and snapped a few pictures.

I hope the Clark’s Spiny Lizard enjoyed the watching game as much as I did, but at last, he/she dashed away, down the lawn, disappearing around a corner. Suddenly, a bird, much too fast for me to identify, swooped after him/her. I hope my new friend got away.

I’ve always liked lizards. Maybe that’s why I’m having so much fun writing about dragons.
